This photo i took in Sulawesi. I spent few days on a lodge and spent two weeks on a liverboard. The diving was different to everything else I used. Only critters... and It took me quite a while to see that littly tiny things. Thanks I had few good guides around me, without I would be lost. :-)

Es ist langsam Zeit sich von Koh Phangan und somit auch von meinem "verlängertem" Wochenende Abschied zu nehmen. Am nächsten Wochenende werde ich in die Schweiz zurückfliegen. Ich hoffe, dass sich der Schnee bis dahin endgültig verzogen hat, und der Frühling einzug hält! ;-)
Die letzten paar Wochen habe ich gemütlich auf meiner kleinen Lieblingsinsel lesend in der Hängematte abgehängt oder tauchend im kühlen nass rumgeplanscht.
Die letzte Woche ging dann noch feucht und fröhlich zu.. Zuerst die Abschiedsfeiern von Ivan, Tim und anschliessend Maria. Dann die Geburtstage von Petsy und Nick. Und zu guter letzt haben wir noch das Thailändische Neujahr begrüsst. Nicht zu vergessen, meine kleine Abschiedsparty, die in den kommenden Tagen folgen wird.
Somit habe ich auf dieser Reise dreimal Neujahr gefeiert. Zuerst das unserige an Sylvester im Vietnam, danach das Chinesische Neujahr mitte Februar in Sydney und jetzt noch Songkram, das Thailändische Neujahr am 13. April.
Mal schauen, ob ich auf der nächsten Reise mehr Neujahr Feste erlebe. :-) Wäre doch ein Ziel? ;-)
Eigentlich ist Songkram verkommen zu einer nationalen Wasserschlacht! Ursprünglich wurde man von den Mönchen mit Wasser für das Neue Jahr gesegnet. Aber heutzutage ist es wirklich eine Wasserschlacht! Alles und jeder wird angespritzt, abgespritzt oder ins Eiskalte Wasser getunkt. War ein Riesenspass und das Kind im Manne kam wiedermal hervor :-)
An dieser Stelle hätte ich gerne noch eine kleine Statistik präsentiert. Zum Beispiel wieviel Kohle für Bier oder Kippen draufging, oder wieviele Meilen und Stunden ich in Flugzeugen, Busen oder Zügen verbracht habe. Leider kam mir dies erst viel zu spät in den Sinn, sodass ich die Zahlen gar nie erfasste... und somit nur Schätzungen abgeben könnte... deshalb lassen wir es lieber gleich bleiben!
Ich habe bei den letzten paar Einträgen nicht mehr geschrieben wie das Wetter war. Es wurde mit der Zeit auch zu eintönig immer nur über Sonnenschein und kaum Regen zu berichten. In der Tat war es so, dass ich die ganze Reise über wirklich kaum Regen hatte! Ein kleines Novum für mich, bin ich es mir doch sonst gewohnt, dass egal wo ich bin, es immer regnet! Sei es sogar in der Wüste!
Tatsache ist, dass es als ich auf Koh Phangan ankam, im November, die ersten beiden Tage regnete und uns aber die Sonne anlachte in den übrigen drei Wochen und es erst am Tage meiner abreise aus Koh Phangan wieder anfing zu regnen.
Die anschliessenden Stationen nach Bangkok, Siem Rep und Phon Penh in Kambodscha, sowie die Saigon, Nah Trang, Hoi An und Hui Me in Vietnam waren sonnig und erst in Hanoi war es regnerisch und kalt, weshalb ich mich entschied, gleich nach Thailand zurückzufliegen und dort noch ein paar Tage zu verbringen, bevor es nach Australien weiterging.
In Australien kam ich am Ende der Hitzewelle an, mit erlebten höchstwerten von 45,7°C in Sydney und dann kam der von den Australiern lang ersehnte Regen! Die anschliessenden Wochen in Sydney glichen dann eher einem Schweizer Sommer. Das Wetter war also durchzogen.
Nach Sydney ging es dann weiter nach Singapur, Malaysia, China und dann wieder nach Koh Phangan. Selbst in Singapur, was ja eigentlich sehr tropisch ist, war es ausserordentlich trocken. Kein Regen in Malaysia und in China nur ein- oder zweimal ein heftiges Gewitter in der Nacht.
Hier auf Koh Phangan war es die letzten vier Wochen trocken. Erst seit zwei Tagen haben wir wieder einige wenige Troppenschauer... aber was solls... meine Abreise steht ja bald bevor. :-)
Also, wie ihr seht, war es wirklich mehrheitlich trocken! Soll noch einmal einer sagen, es sei meine Schuld wenn es regnet! ;-)
So, nun ists an der Zeit auf dieser Insel die Rechnungen zu bezahlen, meine sieben Sachen zusammen zu suchen, langsam die Koffer zu packen und mich auf ein Wiedersehen mit meinen Lieben zu Hause zu freuen!

Ich brach Anfangs März zu einer kleinen zehntägigen Tour nach Südchia auf und besuchte meinen alten Herrn und seine chinesische Frau Xining in Nanning. Nicht, dass ich viel organisieren hätte müssen... einzig und allein Visa beantragen und Flug buchen musste ich dazu beitragen. Alles andere haben Xining und Beibei (die Nichte von Xining) organisiert.
So wurde man auch gleich standesgemäss von der halben Familie am Flughafen abgeholt und mit zwei Fahrzeugen in die City eskotiert. Dort angekommen, gings dann auch gleich in ein Restaurant im obersten Stock eines Wolkenkratzers zum Abendessen. Nicht, dass es speziell gut gewesen wäre im Gegenteil, aber dem Schein an gehört es zum guten Ton dort zu essen.
Nach dem anschliessenden Barbesuch gings dann schnurstracks in die Wohnung von meinem Vater und Xining. Schlafen war angesagt, denn am nächsten Morgen ging die Tour gleich weiter. Abgeholt von Beibei in ihrem schwarzen Merz gabs eine Stadtbesichtigung durch Nanning bevor wir anm Strassenmarkt in der City zu abend assen.
Am nächsten Tag ging die grosse Tour los. Abgeholt von einem Chaffeur mit Van fuhren wir in Richtung Norden nach Longji und Guilin, begeleitet von Xinings Nichte und Neffe. Übernachteten in einem Kurhotel mit termischen Quellen bevor wir am nächsten Tag zu den Reisfeldern in den Bergen fuhren.
Abends gings dann nach Guilin wo eine kleine Stadtschifffahrt über Kanäle und Brücken, vorbei an Pagoden und Tempeln auf dem Programm stand. Am daruaffolgenden Tag gabs dann die grosse Flussschifffahrt auf dem Li River, entlang an den malerischen "Zuckerhüten" oder wie immer man diese Bergformation nennen will nach Yangshuo. Abends in Yangsho schauten wir uns noch ein grosses Spetakel auf dem Wasser an. Es war eine Art Tanzaufführung mit Bambusbooten auf dem Wasser von der grösse eines olympischen Eröffnungsabends. Als Mann darf man es zwar nicht zugeben, aber es war echt Eindrücklich mit dem ganzen Lichtspiel und wie sie die Hügel im Hintergrund anstrahlten. Auf alle Fälle wesentlich besser als Riverdance oder Hollywood on Ice.
Am nächsten Tag ging es dann gleich an Nanning vorbei und wir fuhren ganz in den Süden ans Meer. Eingeladen zum Abendessen von Geschäftspartnern von Beibei, welcher auch gleich noch das Hotel bezahlte gings am nächsten Tag mit der Fähre auf eine Vulkaninsel, bevor wir am darauffolgenden Tag noch an den Strand und in die Altstadt von Beihai ging und wir die Fahrt zurück nach Nanning antraten.
Taschengeld, gabs wie früher von meinem alten Herrn, aber im Gegensatz zu früher, konnte ich diesesmal nicht alles auf den Putz hauen. Entweder wurde mein Vater grosszügiger, oder ich sparsamer. :-)
Wir ihr seht wurde ich in etwa so durch Südchina gehetzt, wie wir es von Chinesen und Japanern kennen, wenn sie auf ihrer 5-tägigen Europatour sind. :-)
Also, kaum eine freie Minute.
Und die meisten Worte wo ich hörte waren die von Beibei. "Alain - Quickly, quickly!", "Alain - look at me!" oder "Alain - Photo me!" waren unentwegt zu hören. :-)
So kam es, dass ich in zehn Tagen China vermutlich mehr Photos von Beibei geschossen habe, als Photos insgesamt auf dem restlichen Tripp!
Witzig war auch zu sehen, dass bei den Chinesen ohne drei Mahlzeiten am Tag gar nichts läuft, auch wenn man nur im Bus sitzt und ausser vor sich hindösen nichts macht! Aber Essen muss sein! Apropos essen... es ist wirklich so, wie man es sich vorstellt. Die Chinesen essen wirklich alles! Um euch nicht den Apetit zu verderben, will ich da gar nicht näher darauf eingehen!
Oder wollt ihr wirklich etwas über Hühnerfüsse, Hund am Spiess, Gänsezungen oder grillierte Schweineschwänze (und damit meine ich nicht die gekringelten) lesen?
Hauptsache, man kann genüsslich darauf herumkauen; sprich, es muss Knochen haben, oder das Fleisch muss zäh sein... sonst schmeckt es einem Chinesen nicht!
Weniger witzig war die Art und Weise der chinesischen Gepflogenheit des Alkoholkonsums. "Campe" und "Cana"... sprich es ging fast alles immer auf Ex! Und immer schön mit jemandem Prost machen! Immerhin, gabs nur kleine Gläser, aber trotzdem... man fühlt sich am nächsten Tag alles andere als Gut!
Nach den Erzählungen von meinem Vater waren noch vor ein paar wenigen Jahren praktisch nur Fahrräder unterwegs. Wenn man den Verkehr in den Städten aber heutzutage sieht, mag man das kaum glauben. Fahrräder sind verschwunden und die meisten fahren in einem Auto oder besitzen wenigstens einen Roller - einen Elektroroller, sei an dieser Stelle vermerkt! Beziner sah man praktisch keine!
Auch sind die Leute neugierig und jeder wo Englisch kann, spricht dich an und will sich mit dir zusammen ablichten lassen!
Doch trotz dem gedrängten Programm war die Kurze Tour durch China schön!

I didn't have done a lot in Singapor. Once more I didn't take time to visit the night-zoo. Maybe I'll see it the next time, when I visit Singapore.
During the day I walked through the streets in Singapore without following a concret plan and after sunset I started to enjoy the night-life. I also met Patrick, an old school-friend who settled down to Singapore a few years ago.
After passing two days in Singapore I went by train to Malaka. Malaka is an old historic harbour city and was oned by dutch and later by britain. Therefore you can see an british and dutch influence and lots of colonial buildings and churchs. Also the chinease quarter, decorated full with lampons and other stuff, is not to be missed.
Aside of this there is not a lot to view in Malaka. Lots of new and ugly buildings were built. I don't know how they get the Unesco world heritage status. Just becuase of a few old colonial buildings and a rebuilt historic waterwheel?
There is the old city of Zofingen, the city I life next, nicer than Malaka. So in my oppinion the Unesco World Heritage status is not worth the paper it's printed on. I saw a few heritages and I was disappointed by most of them. Not a good guide if you follow them!
We all know that asian people loves karaoke. Lots of restaurants and bars have Karaoke. But what I've seen in Malaka bets everything! And the end of the chinease street they have a hughe karaoke stage! Really funny watching them sining and dancing!
In Malaka I lived in an old chinease house which have been rebuild to an hotel. The owners were very nice and had always time for a little chat! So if you like to stay in Malaka, I realy can suggest staying at the Herren House.
After Malaka I went further to Kuala Lumpur. I took the train again. The landscape was very beautiful and the journey was short. It just took a little bit more than two hours. I did the obligate sightseeing in KL. Went to the Twin Towers, vistend some Mosques and went up to the TV tower. But the main time in KL I used to write my Blog. So I sit for hours in a cofe and wrote and wrote and wrote...
Tomorrow I'll move further. I decided to shorten my stay in Malaysia. So, I won't go to Cameroon Highlands, Langkawi and Koh Lipe. Instead I'll fly direct to Koh Samui and by ferry to Koh Phangan. I miss my friends and furthermore the diving!

I left Sydney earlier this week. Currently I'm writing those lines from a coffee shop in Malaka to Cuban sound. Somehow, it feels strange. :-)
By the way, Malaka is an old historical harbour city, in other words, the predecessor of Singapore. Malaka also enjoys the status of an Unesco World Heritage. But I'll write later more.
Of course I couldn't leave Sydney with one last minor problem. Due to the fact I couldn't show the Credit Card with which the booking was made they refused to give me the boarding card at the check-in desk.
But how should I have shown them the card. I didn't have booked the flight by myself. A travel agency have done it for me and they have used their credit card...
However, after a long phone call between my travel agency and the check-in staff and simultanoues between the ticket office of Singapore Airs they handed me the boarding card out.
I'm looking forward to the bill of my mobile carrier... :-(
As some of you might know, I went to Sydney for some English lessons. This was also the main reason I stayed for 6 weeks in Sydney and didn't travelled a lot through Australia. During this time I lived within a nice familie togheter with two other students. I realy liked it living there and we had a lot to laugh. I also met a lot of people at school and we had a lot of fun!
Of course I took the school very serious and I did my homework all the time. Therefore I can't write a lot of Sydney. ;-)
Maybe I could mention the barbeque we had at the Mainly beach. Since then a Japanease student (I keep his name for myself, ok. Never mind. It was Yuki! :-) ) doesn't drinks Tequilla anymore.
Or the weekend in the vineyards of Hunter Valley, where we broaded our minds about Australian wines.
Not to forget the afternoons at the fishmarket. Walking between the fish-, seafood-, cheesemarket, the bottle shop and our table. Delicious all these lovely food!
Even also we walked through Sydney and checked all the sights out or we had nice and long discussions in pubs and hotels. But I have to admit that I still think, as I've seen the Opera House for my first time 12 years ago, it's ugly!
By the way 12 years ago. I didn't recognize a lot of changes. At least nothing, which I would have noticed. Harbour Bridge and Opera House remains still at the same place. The Harbour is same hughe and the espresso is still called short black.
Not a good idea to order an Espresso in the Aussie way in South Africa. Specialy not at the airport of JoBo...
What I noticed was that the Aussies aren't that relaxed anymore. They are more stressed and you don't get greeted anymore on the streets.
And if you wish an older woman a good morning... she just answer: "It's a bloody day, it rains!". Really! And this just because of a few drops! Happend to me exactly that way. But luckly shorts and long white socks disapperead of the streets aswell.
All in all you still life good in Sydney. At least aslong there is not heat wave. I arrived at the end of the heat wave, but still... experiencing temperatures above 45°C feels quite hot. And you are happy about every aircondition, even you usually just blame all those bloody aircons!
And Sydney is still the most multi-cultural city I know. All those restaurants from all over the world. It's great and delicious!
Everytime I've to smile, when I remember the way signs. Even if you would have to walk over the ocean, but I can't imagine me to find the way if you would follow the signs. Or do you have any idea why the directions for London, Frankfurt and Berlin are that far away?
Opera House and Harbour Bridge are recogniseable on the next two frames. Isn't it ugly the Opera House, is it? Do you wonder what the big fat rubber duck in Darling harbour does? Me too. But as far as I know the moved it to the Darling Harbour for the Aussie-Day ceremonies.
The next picture shows the sight of the harbour and the bay out of the TV tower.
And the last picture I've taken at the Aussie-Day, where the Sydney Philharmonics played their interpretation of Felinis movie music at the Domain Park. By the way my first classical concert. Lucky me, there was a metal festival two weeks ago, where I took the opportunity to move my music soul back into balance and harmony. :-)
I just say it once: It's cold, damn cold! I mean, If you are in South-East Asia or Indochine, you didn't expect to have that kind of weather and you never thought to feel all the time cold. It's really cold! I mean, last X-Mas, back in Switzerland, it was warmer than right now here in Ha Noi. Damn cold... belive me!
Did I allready tell you, that it's realy cold here? :) Even with my brand-new Mammut soft shell I felt cold! And it rains, ok fair enough... it just rains, so it's not snowing... also it's above zero degrees, but still... it's cold.
So, the decision was easy done. I just canceled the Hotel, and I'll fly as soon as possible to Bangkok, doing some shopping there, before I'll fly to Sydney on Saturday.
All in all I had a good time in Vietnam, but I will never go back. The landscape is very beautiful. Intact jungle, hughe rice fields, lonsome bays and beaches... But the vietnameses self are quite annoying. I mean, not every vietnamese is annoying, of course not! Only those who tries to sell something... But as most vietnameses I meet, tried to sell some stuff... ;)
Funny thing on Ha Noi was, that they have streets were all the shops are selling the same stuff. And those streets are named after the goods they sell. I liked it. You need shoes or cloths? Just go the the particular street - and your choose is countless!

Hoi An is a nice old former harbour city influenced by chinease and french. Hoi An lived from trading between China / Japan and India. Today they live from silk, leather and cloths, selling to tourists. It's packed with shops... if you own a house, then you either have a cloth shop, a restaurant or a hotel. If you don't own anything of those things, then you have a massage or a hair dresser studio. If you can't call on of those two studios your own, then you sell cans or bottles. In the worst case, you sell food at the market or on your little street kitchen. But, I guess, there is noone, who doesn't try to sell anything.
I wonder, who's gonna to buy all those stuffs. Supposed to be the women. :)
Intressting to see, and probabaly not a lot altered recently, are the chinease clan houses. There are 5 clan houses from different families / ethinics. Each one with own school and temple.
Also other buildings are nice. Not really colorful, as most buildings are yellow painted, but still nice. Small place, easy to walk and as I wrote before, it's quiet. Not a lot of traffic, some roads are for pedestrians only, which makes it like a charm living here. Away from all the traffic noise. :)
Tomorrow I'll go by nighttrain to Hanoi, where I'll end up my travel through vietnam.
By the way; the last few days it just rained once. Most of the time the weather is cloudy but fair. :)
I just arrived in Nah Trang, a couple of days ago, by night train and I still don't know, what I like most in Nha Trang. Is it the nice green water park, the freaky colored ferry wheel or the beautiful beach? Nah... of corse it's the freaky ferry wheel. :)
The beach is amazing. Very long and golden. But for me it seems more like they want become a second copacabana, with all those hotels and bars at the beach front.
Yesterday I was diving. If you haven't your own equipment with you (I kept mine in Thailand) it's a mess. Specially if you only get an old 3mm wet suite... it's damn cold, down there. :)
I haven't taken any pictures, as my underwater case is also in Thailand. But at least, I've seen a Sea Moth for my very first time. It was nice to observing him, how he turned his little circles on the ground. Aside of this, the sight and conditions weren't the best. Muck dive, some hard corals and not a lot of fish life. Nevertheless I enjoyed just to get my head under water. :)
By the way, the weather just changed. It's mostly cloudly and there are some little showers. Seems, my sunny days are passed. :)
There is not really a lot to write about Phnom Penh (capitol city of Cambodia) and Saigon (officially named Ho Chi Minh City). Or at least, I wouldn't know what...
I didn't feel very well in those cities. Too busy, too loud and too many hawkers and hookers... But still, aside of this, it's worth to stay a night or two.
Just after arriving Phnom Penh by bus and changing to a tuk-tuk the first impression what I had was kind of shocking. It's evening, roush hour, plenty of tuk-tuks, bikes and cars. Out from the corner of one's eye you see 3 guys and a baby on a motorbike. In itself, nothing unusual. But then you notice an infusion and a tube going to the little girls arm. The mother, holding here baby in one arm, and hitting her back with the other hand, screaming here name louder and louder... and you, you just sit in a tuk-tuk, in the middle of the traffic, and there is absolutely nothing you can do...
However, I hope the little Girl is still alive. The traffic was in both cities the hell. I mean - I don't mind to drive bikes and cars in cities. Drived in Athen, Mailand, Paris around the "l'arc triomphe" but that was nothing compared to Phnom Penh and Saigon. Not even in Bangkok is the traffic that worse. They are coming from all sides and going in a random direction, cuting other ways. Really crazy.
I mean it's like you have several zippers and you try to zip all with only one pull tab.
I never would drive there by myself. Even crossing the roads was an adventure. But at the end you just walked and hoped the others brake - or at least they honk. :)
The first two pictures were tooken in Phnom Penh. The first shows the Royal Palace and the second was made close to the royal palace at the mekong. Unfortunatly the royal palce was closed due to the dead of the king's father in October.
The other four pictures were made in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) and shows the market Ben Thanh, the opera house and not really a busy crossroads.
I just spent a weak in Siem Reap exploring the temples around Angkor, visiting the flooting village at the lake of Tonlé Sap and went for a day to Kulen, watching the waterfalls and the big Budha on top of a little rock.
I spent three days visiting the temples around Angkor, but I just have seen a little bit of this hughe area. There are close to 300 temples on an area of 160sqkm. You could spent there ages and you haven't seen all. Well you can't, because I guess after a while you get bored. :) But still, I mean, it's amazing what they build there more than 1000 years ago. Specially the water reservoirs around the main complexes, like Angkor Wat, are impressiv.
Intressting was to see different Hindu aswell Budha elements at the same temple. Depending on the King, they conversed the religion and changed the sculptures.
15 years ago, there were only three hotels in Siem Reap. Today, there are more Hotels than temples. Bars and Pubs are uncountable. So, I guess, you can imagine how busy this
city
is!
But even, it's that busy, you still find some nice beer gardens, where tourists are rare and the beer is cheap! You easily could invite your driver, eating and drinking till late, and spent not more than 20U$. Nice places, if there just not would be the next morning... :)
The first picture is taken at the temple called Ta Prohm. This temple was one of the movie locations of Tomb Raider. I need to watch this movie again, because I don't remember to this scenes. Well, probably because I just stared to the legs of Angelina Jolie... and I guess, I would to this again :)
The second picture shows Angkor Wat. This temple was built in the 11th century and the biggest and most well known temple in Cambodia.
The third picture shows the temple of Banteay Srei, built in the 10th century.
4th and 5th pictures are taken at Kulen. There you can see a big lieing Budha on top of a rock, Waterfalls and Hindu elements in a river.
The last picture is taken at a floating village on the canals to the lake of Tonlé Sap, which is the biggest sweetwater lake in southeast Asia.
Yesterday I went by bus to Phnom Penh, the capitol city of Cambodia. Today I'll try to book a boat tour or cruise, heading forward to Saigon.
By the way, the weather is still amazing. No rain at all and tempratures above 30° c. Even during the night it gets not less than 20°. And december is supposed to be the coldest month...
After having two weeks of beautiful weather, it's time to move on. I enjoyed a great time at Koh Phangan and had quite a few very nice dives at Sail Rock.
Specially the last dive yesterday, was just fu... mind blowing :)
For the whole dive we were surrounded by whale sharks! There were at least three, most of the guides thought four, whale sharks around us all the time. It was just unbelivable. One hour dive and you have been chasted to wahle sharks... can you imagine this?
Of course I'd like to share some underwater pictures with you!
- The first picture shows a Jelly Fish. Probably it's a Lion's Mane Jelly Fish... but i'm not sure.

This evening I'll travel further to Surat Thani and further to Bangkok by ferry and nighttrain. In Bangkok I will stay for one night, before I fly to Siem Reap ( Cambodia) where I will stay for a couple of days, visiting Ankor and some other temples in this area.
By the way; it just started to rain today. Right now, we have heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning. But all in all I had nearly two weaks without a single drop. Perfect start for my holidays. :)
The day after. It's actually the day after after after... Due to a power outtage the last few days, I wasn't able to write something. Not, that I would have written something in the meantime, but it's always good to blame someone else. :) Actually it was very peaceful and I enjoyed it much. No Music, no lights and I celebrated my birthday with candle light and friends, I meet here on this Island over the last few years.
Unfortunately I've forgotton to take the camera with me, on my birthday. So I can't show you the delicious Cuaccamole and Ceviche I did. Anyway, it might be better this way. So there are no photo evidences of this late evening :)
The picture you see on the left I just did yesterday while diving at Sail Rock. Sail Rock is a little pinnackle, not far from this Island, and it's full of life! Hughe schools of Trevallis, Sweet Lipps, Fisiliers, Baraccudas and Bat Fishes you an see here. There aren't many places, around the world, I know with that amount of fishs!
By the way. It didn't rain the last 6 or 7 days. Might be a new record for me beeing in vacation without having rain for so many days in a row. :)
